Designing With Yellow

How To Use Yellow In Your Home

Yellow is often labelled as bold or intimidating, but when used thoughtfully it can be one of the most versatile and uplifting colours in an interior. Here we explore how yellow can be warm, grounding, or quietly neutral rather than overwhelming.

Often thought of as a colour that demands attention and perceived as bold or intimidating, yellow is a highly versatile hue that when used in interiors, can be incredibly calming and nuanced. With many different shades, the way yellow reacts with light and aspect can make it feel sunwashed, rich and cocooning or bright, airy and contemporary. It is a colour where finding the right undertone, brightness and depth can bring natural warmth and energy to a space. With careful planning, yellow can lift darker spaces, connect seamlessly with natural materials like stone and wood, and even act as a neutral backdrop without overwhelming a scheme.

The Yellow Spectrum

One of the most versatile shades to work with, yellow spans a broad spectrum of tones – from soft buttery hues to rich ochres and deep amber shades. The key to understanding and selecting the right shade lies in its undertones and how they respond to light, location and the purpose of a room. A cooler, clearer yellow can feel fresh and uplifting, whilst warmer, earthier tones bring with them depth and grounding. Choosing the right shade not only shapes how a room interacts with surrounding colours, materials and light, but also how the space will feel as a whole.

Every colour carries with it psychological effects on our brains and, while often completely subconscious, these effects are something we should all take into consideration when making colour selections for our home. Whether used as an accent or as a primary hue, yellow can breathe life into any room, but with its naturally energizing qualities, more social rooms of the house such as kitchens and living areas can often be the most appropriate places for this stimulating colour. Utilising yellow tones into rooms like these, where you need an extra boost of energy, will allow you to harness those uplifting qualities while still maintaining a peaceful balance throughout the home.

For classic interiors looking to envelope spaces in warmth, a warm golden yellow can be both uplifting and inviting. Pelham Gold is the perfect balance of rich yellow hues, with its contrasting soft red border adding extra dimension and interest.

Ixworth makes a striking area rug when joined together, ideal for defining zones and adding texture and subtle pattern.

For grounding, earthy interiors, look to yellows with an undertone of red and brown, which pair beautifully with deep olive greens, chocolate browns and rich tans, creating incredibly sophisticated yet effortless spaces that feel considered and balanced.

Finally, for homes where natural materials like stone, wood and an organic palette require softening with a hint of colour, light honey tones of yellow make for an elegant pairing. Echoing natural hues often found in nature, lighter yellow can be used as a calming neutral that evokes complete tranquility, perfect for carrying a space throughout the seasons

Introducing Yellow Through Pattern

Yellow does not always need to be introduced in large blocks of colour to make an impact. When added through texture and pattern, it can make spaces feel layered, considered and nuanced.

Rich, earthy tones like those found in Morella Amber see the intricate and highly patterned design create instant impact in hallways and stairs, injecting subtle warm colour and character.

The geometric, sculptural stripes of our Hand Tufted Divide rug also provide a great option to pair against a natural palette – adding quiet interest and a calming neutral balance that won’t overwhelm your space.

In studies and offices, where practicality is often prioritised over design, adding uplifting colour can revitalise and inspire. Apex delivers a confident and sophisticated pop of yellow amongst a bold, graphic design and smart tufted pile, that sits beautifully in contemporary monochromatic settings whilst delivering contrast and colour.

Two Interior Schemes Using Mila Gold

A dynamic and highly textural design, Mila blends tonal colour and quiet definition, making it a versatile runner that works in a number of different styles and schemes. Mila Gold is an uplifting colourway that sees tones of sand, ochre and gold layered amongst calming neutrals, with the design a popular choice across a range of different interiors. These two schemes using Mila Gold on the stairs demonstrate how location, light and different approaches to designing can completely alter how a space can feel, despite using the same design.

In a cool north-facing hallway, Mila Gold introduces warmth and creates a balanced atmosphere, paired with pale dusky blue woodwork and rustic wood tones. Injecting a quiet transition of colour throughout the home, interior designers Studio BN demonstrate how a considered understanding of colour theory and materiality can transform what could be a cold and uninviting space into one brimming with character and cohesion.

On the other end of the spectrum, in the home of A Rum Fellow founders, the hallway has been drenched in sunshine yellow. Lifting the mood as soon as you step through the front door, Mila Gold reinforces the sunny, happy vibe by strengthening the bold wall colour and creating a fun, energised space.

While it’s clear to see that this versatile shade can bring warmth and joy to a whole plethora of spaces, with that comes the opportunity to truly make it your own. So, whether you are looking to bring warmth to a north-facing room, add depth to a scheme or make a bold statement in your hallway, yellow is an inviting and versatile option. And, with so many of our favourite designs across our flatweave and hand-tufted ranges embracing this wonderful colour, why not explore the full collection over on our website.
