Flooring Inspiration For A Childs Bedroom

Few rooms work as hard as a child’s bedroom, balancing rest, play and creativity in one space. Therefore, considering what flooring options to choose, and how they will evolve and grow with your family, can have a huge impact on a space.

Read on to discover some inspiring options, and to find out more about why a Roger Oates rug is the right choice for your home.

Why Should I Choose a Wool Rug?

For those weighing up which type of flooring and rug is the best choice for their child’s bedroom or playroom, wool offers a wealth of advantages, particularly for spaces that work hard everyday. Durable, biodegradable and renewable natural fibre, wool combines practicality and comfort in a way few other materials can.

Inherently resilient, wool has a natural elasticity that allows it to bounce back, making it especially well suited to a child’s bedroom that is filled with movement, play and activity. Its structure also helps repel dirt and resist staining, great for a space where spills and mishaps are a part of daily life. Beyond this, wool is inherently soft and naturally insulating, retaining warmth whilst absorbing sounds to create a comforting space for young minds to rest.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, wool can contribute to a healthier environment indoors, especially effective in cities and larger towns. It not only helps regulate humidity by absorbing and releasing moisture, but it is also known to absorb and neutralise VOCs, improving ambient indoor air quality that is especially important for children with allergies and where pollution is more prevalent in everyday life.

This connection to natural materials also aligns with our belief in biophilic design. By incorporating authentic, organic materials into the home, we can build spaces that feel calmer, more balanced and restorative. Biophilic design, and using natural fibres such as wool, not only brings a sense of grounding, but they help reduce stress and create spaces that foster wellbeing and productivity, factors that are particularly important for spaces designed to nurture development.

Inspiring Designs

Alongside its practical benefits, wool offers tactile comfort and visual versatility. Whether you choose a bespoke hand tufted rug or a flatweave floor covering, they can provide a foundation that can be as playful as you wish, allowing spaces to feel imaginative, uplifting and colourful whilst remaining considered and beautifully designed.

Featured here in this playful, gender neutral scheme is our hand tufted Harford Zig Zag Rug. Creating a maze of pattern across the floor, this rug invites play into a space and holds its own against bold, contrasting patterns to create a room filled with excitement. Remember, these are the spaces where we can have fun – be daring and experiment with colour and pattern to create a space that sparks joy not only for your children, but also your own inner child.

Texture & Tactility

Choosing a hand tufted rug has many advantages for a child’s bedroom or play area. The deep pile creates a soft, inviting and safe area for children to sit and play, especially babies and toddlers. They are also incredibly tactile, with different pile heights and colours creating a visual and sensory experience. With the option to design something entirely unique for your child’s space, a hand tufted rug provides versatility and the opportunity to create a fun, textural experience.

Atlas features kaleidoscopic waves of colour, playing with movement and texture amongst a subtle 3D tufted effect. An uplifting and playful design, it is the perfect addition to any room crying out for a bit of fun. Another option to consider is our Fragment hand tufted rug, where flecks of playful, textured colour are scattered amongst a speckled background revealing different pile height in this tactile design. With both designs fully customisable, create a colourful bespoke version to tie in with your interior scheme.

Subtle Tones

Rugs featuring subtle hues and a hint of colour have the power to ground a room with a cocooning and relaxing atmosphere. Our collection of Sgraffito rugs provide a perfect harmony of subtle colour, and understated, organic texture to make you feel at home within your space.

Styled here with soft pastels and rich textures, the Sgraffito Honey creates a warm and comforting base for a nursery room. With six Sgraffito colourways available, in a range of muted colours and neutral tones, this design is perfect for a soft, understated space that will mature with your child.

Or for something that plays with a little more colour, Arta Opal features multicoloured pastel tones arranged into dotted pairs that are found across the width of soft neutral background. With hues ranging from antique pink, sky blue and olive green, this adaptable design is a great choice that will evolve with a space throughout the years. With such a plethora of tones within the weave, designs like this are able to pair well with a multitude of different colours, making them perfect for a child’s developing tastes.

Playful Pattern

If you’re looking for timeless design that carries children through from nursery to teenage years, then a stripe pattern could be the answer. From bold and colourful rugs, to textural stripes that invite play and tactility, this pattern remains a timeless addition to the home. With a neutral rib background, Kahlo Temple highlights evenly spaced diamond stripes in varying playful pastels. When joined together, stripes multiply to create a visually striking and colourful flatweave rug, perfect for playrooms and schemes where vivid hues and playful textures are the focal point.

Paired here with our colourful Williamsburg rugs, these fully reversible woven designs make for a fun pop of colour in any space. Available in four colourways, the Williamsburg sees a textural herringbone stripe, grounded with a neutral yarn throughout to perfectly offset the bright colours. If bright colours aren’t your style, opt for the calming tones of French Grey for a more understated wash of muted tones within your space.

Bold Colour and Contrast

For the creatives and lovers of all things colourful, building a visually fun and inspirational space is so important. Our sculptural Axo rug plays with geometry, colour and inviting textures, making it ideal for a fun and stimulating scheme. Inspired by Scottish pattern and history, Axo’s deep 3D pile is perfect for adding softness and depth, whilst its striking shape and colour creates an inviting area for play.

In contrast to the angles of Axo, the synergy of the heavy and light curves in Infinite Loops move through the pattern, forming a continuous and dynamic motion that symbolises the endless cycles of life – a fitting backdrop for a space that will see your child grow and develop through life.

Created in collaboration with design studio Granite and Smoke, both our ‘Axo’ and ‘Infinite Loops’ rugs make striking additions to a whole range of spaces within the home. We believe that playful design doesn’t always have to be confined to children’s spaces and unique, one-of-a-kind designs such as these Granite and Smoke rugs, should be enjoyed by children and adults alike.

As with all of our rugs featured in this article, while playful in nature, they can help bridge the gap between spaces and generations, creating environments that are child friendly while maintaining the sophistication necessary for a family space. In a recent interview with Interior Designer Susan Van Meter, we asked her thoughts on decorating children’s spaces and family homes:

I believe bold colours can be used throughout the house, not just in children’s rooms. I always advise not to go too ‘cutesy’ or over the top with bunnies or ducks as an example. Children grow up quickly and the room needs to be adapted with the development of the child. But, keep it fun, it can still be sophisticated and stimulating. – Susan Van Meter
