Introducing two vibrant and dynamic hand tufted rugs by Granite + Smoke made in collaboration with Roger Oates Design and debuted at Clerkenwell Design Week.

When design studio Granite + Smoke approached us about making some hand-tufted rugs for their stand at Clerkenwell Design week, we were immediately excited to bring their vision to life.

As well as recognising the beauty in the designs the team put forward we also knew our two companies would align with a shared belief in conscious craft and sustainable design and a love for colour and pattern.

Granite + Smoke is Lindsey Hesketh and Claire Canning, life-long friends, and design professionals. The studio, founded in 2019, draws from their multi-disciplinary backgrounds, Lindsey in architecture and Claire in interiors and textiles. Playful, graphic, and modern, Granite + Smoke offers beautifully crafted and responsibly made luxury products, made in the UK. The name Granite + Smoke references The Granite City (Aberdeen) and The Big Smoke (London), the two influential cities where Claire and Lindsey live and design.

The Axo hand-tufted rug is inspired by timeless and historical Scottish patterns. The geometric overlapping and intersecting of diamond motifs, steeped in symbolism and tradition, are reimagined into a contemporary tapestry. Sculpting the rugs by hand to create a 3D pile effect enhances the geometry and allows the faceted pattern to move and flow across the design. The Axo rug sees colours shift from pale pink, through to rust and on to dark teal.

The Infinite Loops hand tufted rug is made up of two elements interconnected, a heavy curve and a light curve forming a circle. The synergy of these two elements moves continuously through the pattern forming a repetitive and dynamic motion. Circles are captivating, symbolising infinity and continuity. An intricate combination of long and sculpted pile alongside neatly sheared short pile brings definition to the circular forms. The Infinite Loops rug works with a palette of peach through to deep navy.

Our signature colour palette sings in these new rugs, with a careful arrangement composed by the Granite + Smoke team who sought to create striking, optical effects using the hand tufted medium.

Here at Roger Oates Design, we are proud of our UK based production, and this supported Claire and Lindsey’s ethos for sustainable and conscious craft with minimal environmental impact.

The Axo and Infinite Loops rugs are made at our Devonshire workshop, where our main hand tufted rug collection is also tufted and hand finished.

The two designs have boundless energy and movement, based on simple repeating shapes in carefully selected gradient colours and 3D texture.

All our hand-tufted rugs and runners are individually made by our small specialist team, blending cutting edge technology with traditional techniques using a specially developed 100% British blend wool that is spun and dyed in Yorkshire. Rugs can be customised in size, shape, colour and form and are made-to-order with a lead time of 6 – 8 weeks.
