Hanging by a Thread
The central element of Ann Hamilton’s “The Event of a Thread” is a silk dramatically suspended on lines across the width of New York’s Park Avenue Armory. Linked to these lines are swings that hang below, perfectly balanced so the motion of people swinging creates waves across the silk. Hamilton describes it as “weaving together our crossings with its motions, sounds and textures” – we say it’s sophisticated and elegant, with swings that take us right back to childhood. Perfectly balanced.
