Introductions: Four Modern Heritage Designs

Here we take a closer look at Introductions. A collection of four designs presented in individual colourways celebrating our heritage palette.

The Introductions collection sees four designs join our collection. Wellington, Malton, Dartmouth and Chelsea are informed by our archives and deeply rooted in heritage colour.

Inspiring Historical Interiors

We often look to historic interiors for inspiration, with the belief that heritage design has a deserving place in a truly modern home. Colours, patterns and material trends evolve over time becoming chapters which inform the design decisions of the future. Introductions tells the story of flatweave and celebrates the part it has played in adorning some of the finest historical homes.

We looked to the earthy pinks and reds favoured in the finest Georgian houses, and to decadent forest greens and dark blues much sought after during the Victorian period; our heritage colour palette is demonstrated perfectly in these four designs.

In a nod to the timeless elegance of the ‘country house interior’ we translated the look with deep jade greens, and sumptuous reds and golds to embolden the collection. Classic column stripes bring an architectural steadiness to designs Malton and Dartmouth, with patterns of a decorative lace-like nature seen in Wellington and bold drama in the highly decorative Chelsea.

Flatweave has a colourful past and is considered one of the oldest forms of rug making. The discovery of a nineteenth century flatwoven fragment in a grand country home and our subsequent commission to reimagine it in 1989; caught our imagination and led to the conception of Roger Oates Design as it is known today. Although the stair runner is now a celebrated choice in interior design, throughout history it has been at the height of fashion and subsequently fallen out of favour. We have always been driven to rejuvenate what was once a long-forgotten interior product for a discerning modern audience.

Scale of Pattern

Pattern can have a transformative effect. Bold or wide stripes are eye-catching and contemporary whilst subtle pinstripes offer a more understated approach, occasionally merging colours together when viewed from afar. Throughout the four designs of the Introductions collection we see four very different scales of pattern.

Wellington Clover

Malton Terracotta

Dartmouth Green

Chelsea Ember

Starting with the delicate ribbons of Wellington Clover where a whimsical arrangement of cool greys sit alongside a lace-like pattern of antique dusky pink; the pattern here is ‘small scale’. Three brighter bands draw the eye to the centre of the runner, however this clever design allows for a continuous pattern repeat when hand seamed together as a rug. Wellington is a great design to choose when looking for a wall-to-wall installation, where a more delicate pattern provides a subtle backdrop.

Next we look to Malton Terracotta where the scale of pattern increases slightly. Striking reds embolden the stripes to create a design that makes a subtle impact. The rhythmic repeat of complementary reds creates a balanced design that we think works brilliantly as a hallway or bedside runner. A pop of colour drenched stripes is the perfect greeting in an entrance hall or landing.

Now to Dartmouth Green, a design that sees evenly proportioned stripes enlivened by a golden pinstripe. With a wider pattern still, the grey rib sections are strengthened by the duo of greens that sit in the alternating herringbone stripes. There is something intrinsically Roger Oates about the Dartmouth stripe – a delicate balance of modern heritage that sits harmoniously in both traditional and contemporary homes.

Lastly we look at Chelsea Ember, a festival of colour and pattern on a grand scale. Wide bands of complex pattern in rich earthy hues make an instant impact, tempered only slightly by deep navy stripes. You can’t help but be drawn to patterns of this nature, a feature rug or statement stair runner is a sure way to add interest to the home.
