Multi-functional, transformative design is high on our list of priorities at Roger Oates Design. Often everyday pieces for busy homes can be overlooked, but this is never the case for our upholstered flatweave benches. We have often said our flatweave is upholstery for the stairs, therefore it seems only natural to use it in different ways. After experimenting with upholstered furniture in the early 2000’s using our original conventional fabric range, we knew we wanted to offer a timeless and functional piece, using our less-conventional 100% wool flatweave as the material.

Turning to a skilled upholsterer close to our studios in Herefordshire, every bench is crafted by hand in small batches, often to order. Staying true to the Roger Oates ethos of using honest quality materials, each piece is finished with handcrafted oak legs.

As part of a collaboration with textile designer and weaver Heather Shields, we have a limited collection of benches upholstered using fine wool cloth. Kirn details an intricate marriage of maritime blues, subtle pinks and neutrals. Larkfield, uses warm monochrome hues with dots, lines, and chevrons magnified and emboldened.

These exclusive cloths are woven in Scotland, using a traditional double cloth technique for a soft, luxurious finish.

Our benches also work particularly well to punctuate a scheme with colour and texture. From the classic and subtle design of the Fulham Lichen Bench with its soft earthy tones that would sit perfectly at the end of any bed, to the energising contrasting stripes of the Fitzroy Bright – bold enough to take centre-stage as a window seat or to stack those coffee table books on. Our homes work around our busy lives, yet reflect our personalities, and adding upholstered pieces are the perfect way to combine function with interest.
