Over the last year at Roger Oates Design we have been developing a collection of tufted rugs and runners to complement our highly sought-after Venetian Flatweave. Now with a collection of five striking designs, we look into the making of our Hand Tufted rugs and runners – from the yarn to the finish and the expertise at every stage.
Our Yarn
Spun and dyed in Yorkshire, we use a British Cheviot wool blend for our tufted rugs and runners, the same as our flatweave. From the blend to the ply, every element has been carefully considered. We use a ‘two ply’ yarn for an unparalleled look and feel. With an open twist, our yarn has a movement and rich texture. When tufted this yarn reflects light in new ways, creating an intensity of colour and greater light reflection – bringing energy and life to our tufted collection.
Process
Influenced by the stripes of our flatweave designs, our new tufted rugs and runners are made in Devon by our small knowledgeable team. Every design is hand tufted with the utmost skill and care and backed using a combination of natural and recycled materials. With varying cut and loop textures, different pile heights achieve the depth, texture and movement that makes this collection so special.
Eighth Rug
This year we look forward to a number of exciting new developments within our Tufted Collection. With demand for custom designs becoming evermore popular, we are thrilled to share images of a recent custom rug entitled ‘Eighth’ – a composition celebrating playful colour with a nod to the abstract and unexpected. Drawing influence from the cut and loop pile of our Lexington design, curved stripes are gathered amongst bright and muted blocks of colour, creating this striking custom addition to our portfolio.
