What should I do on my landing?

Every room has a function, but what can we do with transient spaces? Read on for a step by step guide to elevating connecting spaces like landings and hallways.

There is no denying we are passionate about staircases, but our runners and rugs also offer a number of versatile options to elevate landings of any shape and size. From tailored, fully-fitted flooring to loose-laid runners,  discover our in-depth guide, where you can explore our numerous landing options and find the right installation for your home.

The Fitted Runner

One of our most popular choices when deciding what to do on a landing is having a runner installed. This option is perfect for quarter and half landings and is often used on narrower landings or hallways. Installing a flatweave runner on the landing creates a smooth transition from the staircase, carrying a design from the stairs through different floors or levels of the home. A runner layout on landings can be installed in a number of ways to suit both traditional and contemporary homes.

When a change in direction is required, a hand sewn mitre is an elegant option, allowing a continuous flow of pattern through the home. The mitred runner works particularly well on designs with borders.

Alternatively, ‘overlaying’ the runner allows a change in direction, resulting in a clean, minimal look. The overlay option works particularly well for repeating designs, especially those of a large scale such as Vernon.

Whether you choose a mitre or overlay, both leave the floor exposed on either side, offering a beautiful contrast of texture and colour against our flatweave.

Wall-to-Wall Flatweave

For larger landings you may wish to opt for a tailored ‘wall-to-wall’ flatweave floorcovering which makes for an eye-catching installation. Using multiple widths of flatweave, each one sewn together by hand in our workshop, every area is individually designed and made to measure.

For a coordinating and cohesive scheme, look to our ‘border and ground’ designs. Our ‘border’ designs feature a contrasting, often bold, border running along the outer edges of the runner and are most popular installed onto stairs. ‘Ground’ designs have been created to provide a coordinating repeating stripe pattern which can be seamed together for landings and wall-to-wall areas.  When expertly installed together, the combined aesthetic of our border and ground flatweave designs unify the connecting spaces throughout the home.

Alternatively, use a single design throughout to create a bold statement stripe or subtly pinstriped landing.

Border and Ground

Border designs work well on stairs and 'ground' design are effective when joined as a wall-to-wall area. Combine both to create a subtle link between two adjoining spaces.

Loose Rugs and Runners

If you’re looking for something that offers more flexibility, laying a loose rug or runner on a landing can work beautifully. For larger, open landings, one of our made to measure rugs brings focus to the space whilst providing a cosy area to sit and linger. For narrow, long and galleried landings, loose runners work particularly well, where the the option to move them around is easy. If you already have your Roger Oates stair runner in place, choose a coordinating design or pick out similar colours in a rug or runner to create cohesion in a simple and elegant way.
