Roger Oates Design | Runners and Rugs

Text 1

“Authentic materials, rich texture and delicate design balance are core to our artisan heritage.”

Roger Oates and Fay Morgan Oates first began designing and hand producing flatweave rugs and runners more than 25 years ago.

The reinvention of the Venetian Flatweave process led to a series of creative experiments with colour, pattern and texture that now number more than 100 individual designs currently in production. This truly British product has become a design classic, furnishing floors and stairs not only in the UK but also across the globe.

Choose from bold striped borders in a herringbone texture to detailed stripes-within-stripes or wide bands of colour. Stripes are endlessly versatile and provide the ultimate in understatement.

We recommend that you have a minimum margin of 5cm either side of your runner and the edge of your staircase. Roger Oates flatweave is woven in three standard widths, 60cm/24", 70cm/27" and 85cm/33.5". Please note all these measurements are approximate. Most designs are woven in one width, but a selection are woven in multiple widths. If you know the approximate width of runner you require use the filters on the Runners for Stairs and Halls page to refine your selection by width.

Can I use my own Fitter?

Flatweave is a specialised material therefore it is essential that you employ somebody experienced in fitting the product. Good fitters will leave you with a high quality installation which will ensure that the carpet performs better over its lifespan. Ask your local stockist if they have a portfolio of work that you can have a look at or if they have any customer references.

The classic collections of signature stripes remain central to our ethos of artisan products, created with care on power looms and checked by hand throughout the process. Our distinctive rugs and runners are made from a British Cheviot wool blend that’s spun and dyed in Yorkshire. The weaving takes place in the UK on specially adapted narrow-width looms to create rugs and runners with clean woven edges. All finishing is then done by hand at our workshop in Herefordshire.

Whether you want to create a natural, neutral backdrop or a stunning design statement, we have the materials, styles and colours to complete every room in your home.
