INTRODUCTIONS
Modern Heritage
Using patterns and colours shaped through time, we present an informed and enduring collection for the modern home.
Introductions tells the story of flatweave and celebrates the part it has played in historic interiors. Using pinks and reds favoured in the finest Georgian houses to decadent forest greens and dark blues, much sought after during the Victorian period; we write the next chapter with four new designs in individual colourways.
VENETIAN FLATWEAVE
Chelsea Ember
68cm / 27″ approx
A re-emergence of historical design ‘Tribal’ originally released in 1997, Chelsea sees a deep navy blue lifted by glowing ochre and rust. A design rich in pattern and contrast, where alternating herringbone and rib sections are edged with a well-proportioned rib border.
VENETIAN FLATWEAVE
Dartmouth Green
63cm / 25″ approx
Olive and Forest green meet cool modern neutrals in Dartmouth, where a punctuating stripe of gold breathes life into an evenly proportioned rib and herringbone repeating stripe pattern. Dartmouth has all the elements of a classic Roger Oates stripe – carefully balancing heritage pattern with contemporary colour.
VENETIAN FLATWEAVE
Malton Terracotta
67cm / 27″ approx
A contemporary interpretation of a heritage ‘Roger Oates red’. Subtle herringbone and rib bands in three shades, from deep copper through to soft terracotta sit on a cool beige weft. In contrast to its monochrome counterpart Malton Black, Malton Terracotta has a wider pattern repeat of three alternating colours, creating a dynamic design suitable for both modern and traditional settings.
VENETIAN FLATWEAVE
Wellington Clover
61cm / 24″ approx
A delicate pattern repeat of alternating lace-like rib sections and narrow herringbone stripes in soft clover pink and slate and dove grey. Brighter pinstripes lift the design, creating interest when seamed together as rugs or wall to wall installations.

Patterns through time
We often look to historic interiors for inspiration, with the belief that heritage design has a deserving place in a truly modern home.
Flatweave has a colourful past and is considered one of the oldest forms of rug making. The discovery of a nineteenth century flatwoven fragment in a grand country home and our subsequent commission to reimagine it in 1989; caught our imagination and led to the establishment of Roger Oates Design . Our aim has always been to rejuvenate this long-forgotten interior product for a discerning modern audience.
With this in mind, we look to the lessons of the past and the historical interiors that have shaped the colours and patterns we use today, even in the most contemporary settings.
