Care and Cleaning

It is important that the correct aftercare is maintained to prolong the life and keep your Roger Oates purchase looking its best for many years. We have some helpful cleaning advice and guidance to help care for flatweave, hand tufted and home accessory products.
Please refer to the titles below to find the specific care and cleaning information for your product.

  • General Advice
Our flatweave products are recommend for domestic properties only. To avoid excessive wear in high traffic areas, a shoe free policy is recommended.

    Vacuuming
We recommend vacuuming with a suction vacuum cleaner at least once a week to remove surface dirt. This will extend the life and maintain the appearance of your runner. Do not use a beater bar vacuum cleaner on venetian flatweave as this can cause damage to the fibres.

    Spillages
Accidents can happen from time to time.

    • Act quickly.
    • Blot the liquid with a soft, colourless absorbent cloth then dab with a clean cloth dampened with a mild upholstery shampoo solution. Rinse and blot dry.
    • Visit the Woolsafe website for a number of cleaning products and methods suitable for wool products
    • Consult a professional cleaning service for stubborn stains or all over cleaning.
    • Do not rub marks or use anything abrasive as this will damage the fibres
    • Do not oversaturate the area as this can lead to damage or further staining.
    • Do not use home steam cleaners

    Protective Treatments
Protective treatments such as Scotchgard or Intec can be applied after installation or by a WoolSafe accredited carpet cleaning company. To find a WoolSafe approved provider visit their website

    Colour change
This may occur over time, especially when fitted in areas of direct sunlight. Colour change will vary depending on the depth of colour chosen and the intensity of the light.

    Professional Cleaning
For stubborn marks and all over cleaning, we advise using a professional carpet and upholstery cleaning company. Search the WoolSafe website for an approved and accredited provider. Members of WoolSafe only use approved cleaning products. Fabriclean are our recommend cleaning company. They cover from the Midlands to the South Coast and from Somerset to Norfolk . Please emailFabriclean for further information.

    Cleaning Products
Visit the Woolsafe website for a list of cleaning products that can be used on wool carpets.

  • Upon Arrival
Please unpack and lay it out flat as soon as possible, this will allow the natural fibres to relax and flatten. If a stubborn fold has occurred in transit, a regular domestic iron can be used on a gentle steam setting to press out the fold. Please avoid applying direct heat to Linen Tape or False Selvedge ends and ensure there is adequate protection underneath your rug or runner if steaming on a wooden floor.

We recommend vacuuming with a suction vacuum cleaner at least once a week to remove surface dirt. This will extend the life and maintain its appearance. Do not use a beater bar vacuum cleaner on venetian flatweave rugs and runners as this can cause damage to the fibres.

  • General Advice
Our hand tufted products are suitable for domestic and commercial settings.

    Upon Arrival
Please unpack and lay it out flat as soon as possible, this will allow the natural fibres in the pile and backing to relax and flatten.

    Vacuuming
We recommend vacuuming with a suction vacuum cleaner at least once a week to remove surface dirt. This will extend the life and maintain its appearance. Do not use a beater bar vacuum cleaner on loop pile rugs and runners as this can cause damage to the fibres. Beater bars can be used on short pile rugs and runners occasionally to help lift flattened pile. Areas of long pile need to be treated with greater care and should be shaken or beaten in the traditional way to dislodge dirt.

    Shedding
New hand tufted rugs will initially have some fibre loss or ‘shedding’, it does not affect the appearance or quality and after vacuuming in the first few weeks, should lessen and then cease.

Sprouting can happen occasionally where individual tufts appear to stand out above the rest of the rug. These should be snipped with scissor, not pulled out.

    Colour Change
Pile flattening can affect the reflection of light and therefore the appearance of colour. Light colours may brighten, and darker colours may fade especially when in contact with direct natural sunlight.

    Pressure Marks
We recommend using furniture cups to protect hand tufted rugs and runners from pressure marks.
